Free Algo Trading Platforms in India: What You Get (2026)
What free algo trading includes in India — free platform tiers, free broker APIs and open source — and the hidden costs nobody puts on the pricing page.
“Free algo trading platform India” is one of the most-searched phrases in this space, and the results are usually either bait or disappointment. Here is the honest version: what genuinely costs nothing, what “free tier” actually includes, and the costs that never appear on a pricing page.
Disclosure: we build INDfolio AI, which has both a free tier and paid plans — so we profit when you upgrade, and you should read this knowing that. We’ve tried to make it the guide we wish existed anyway.

The three kinds of “free” in Indian algo trading
1. Free tiers of commercial platforms
Most serious platforms — ours included — offer a ₹0 tier. The pattern across the industry: free tiers give you the workflow (build, backtest, sometimes paper trade) with caps on volume — backtests per day, years of data, live deployments, strategy count. The purpose is honest on both sides: you verify the platform fits before paying.
What to check on any free tier, since limits differ and change:
- Can you backtest with real Indian costs (brokerage, STT, exchange charges, slippage), or is cost modelling paywalled? A free backtest without costs is a fiction generator.
- Is paper trading included? That’s the stage that actually protects your capital.
- Can you export or keep your strategies if you don’t upgrade?
INDfolio AI’s free tier and the exact caps are on our pricing page — paid plans have a 7-day trial, and we’d rather you exhaust the free tier first.
2. Free broker APIs
Some Indian brokers charge nothing for API access, which makes the execution layer free if you bring your own software:
- Dhan — made its name partly on free API access for retail algo traders; see our Dhan API guide.
- Shoonya (Finvasia) — lowest-cost positioning (₹5-capped orders since its 2026 schedule; delivery still ₹0) with free API access.
- Fyers — developer-friendly API; see our Fyers API guide.
- Others (including Zerodha’s Kite Connect) price API access separately.
Broker API terms change without notice — always verify on the broker’s official page the week you decide. A free API gives you order placement and data; it gives you no strategy builder, no backtester, no monitoring. Which brings us to:
3. Open source — free software, expensive ownership
Python plus broker SDKs — typically an open-source engine such as Backtrader alongside your broker’s official SDK — is genuinely ₹0 in licence fees, and it’s the right choice for some traders. The costs move elsewhere: months of build time, a server that must be up at 9:15 every day, data quality you must police yourself, and every edge case (partial fills, rejections, token expiry, reconnects) becoming your personal bug. Our full assessment: how retail traders can automate trading.
If your time is worth anything, open source is the most expensive free option on this page — unless the engineering itself is the hobby, in which case it’s the best one.
The hidden costs of “free” that nobody lists
Whatever route you choose, these costs exist and are never on the pricing page:
- Bad backtests. A free backtester without Indian cost modelling or with synthetic options premiums will bless strategies that lose money live. The cheapest subscription is cheaper than one month of trading a fictional edge.
- Slippage and infrastructure gaps. Free tools that skip validation (Monte Carlo, forward testing) push the testing into your live account.
- Your data. Some free tools are free because your strategies, flow or attention are the product. Read what happens to strategy logic you upload.
- Transaction costs themselves. Even with everything free, STT, exchange charges, GST and stamp duty are charged on every trade. High-frequency “free” trading has a very real per-trade cost floor — we broke it down in the risk management guide.
A sensible free-first path
You can get remarkably far without paying anyone:
- Build and backtest on a free tier — write the strategy in plain English, test it against NSE history with full costs.
- Paper trade it free on live market data for a few weeks.
- Only then decide whether the strategy earns a paid plan, a free broker API + your own code, or the bin (most strategies; this is normal and is the system working).
Paying for tooling before a strategy survives steps 1–2 is backwards. Paying after is often the cheapest thing in your trading stack.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free algo trading platform in India? Free tiers of commercial platforms (including INDfolio AI) are genuinely free with volume caps. Fully free end-to-end automation means a free broker API plus your own code — free in money, expensive in time.
Which broker gives a free API for algo trading? As of August 2026: Dhan and Shoonya are the best-known free-API brokers, with Fyers also developer-friendly — verify current terms on official broker pages, as these change. Our broker integration pages are here.
Can I backtest for free in India? Yes — several platforms allow limited free backtesting. The question to ask is quality, not price: real NSE data, real option chains, full Indian costs. Our comparison: top 10 backtesting websites in India.
Is free algo trading safe? The free/paid axis isn’t the safety axis. Safety comes from official broker APIs, visible orders in your broker terminal, and validated strategies. A paid platform bypassing official APIs is less safe than a free one using them. Context: is algo trading legal in India?
