Dhan brokerage calculator — full charges on an NSE trade

Last updated:

Short answer

Dhan charges ₹0 brokerage on equity delivery, 0.03% or ₹20 (whichever is lower) per executed order on equity intraday, and a flat ₹20 per order on futures and options. Statutory charges — STT, NSE transaction charges, SEBI fees, stamp duty and 18% GST — apply on top, plus a DP charge of ₹14.75 (₹12.5 + GST) per instruction on delivery sells. This calculator itemises the full cost and shows your breakeven.

Estimate for one NSE round trip (one buy + one sell order). Brokers round each component per order, so contract notes can differ by small amounts. For options, prices are premiums and quantity is lots × lot size.

Dhan pairs a Zerodha-style price card — free delivery, ₹20 caps elsewhere — with one of the most generous API policies among Indian brokers: DhanHQ API access is free, which has made it a favourite of algo traders who resent paying a monthly fee just to connect. The costs that remain are the ones no broker can waive.

How Dhan’s charges work

Delivery carries no brokerage — a buy-and-hold position pays only the statutory stack (STT at 0.1% each side, NSE transaction charges at 0.00307%, SEBI fee, 0.015% buy-side stamp duty, GST on the non-tax parts) plus ₹14.75 per instruction in DP charges when shares leave the demat account on a sell. Intraday is 0.03% capped at ₹20 per order. Futures and options are flat ₹20 per executed order, with no percentage alternative — a small futures order pays the same ₹20 a large one does.

The flat futures fee is the one place Dhan’s card differs meaningfully from Zerodha’s: on a futures order below about ₹66,700, Zerodha’s 0.03% percentage beats Dhan’s flat ₹20, and above it they are identical. For index futures at current notional values, virtually every order is above the crossover, so in practice the two cost the same.

Dhan for algo traders: the free-API angle

For systematic traders, Dhan’s real price advantage is not on the contract note — it is the ₹0 API fee. Brokers that charge ₹500–2,000 a month for API access add a fixed cost that a small account must out-trade before its strategy earns a rupee; Dhan removes that hurdle. The per-trade economics above then match the rest of the discount pack, with statutory charges dominating as always.

INDfolio AI connects to Dhan through the official DhanHQ API and deducts this same cost stack per trade in backtests, so a strategy validated on the platform has already paid Dhan-level costs on every simulated fill.

Worked examples: Dhan charges on four typical trades

Computed by the same engine as the calculator above, so the two always agree. Each trade is bought and sold at the same price, so the total is the pure cost of the round trip and the breakeven is the price move needed just to cover it.

These calculators are free, run entirely in your browser, and store nothing. They produce estimates for NSE trades based on published rates and standard formulas — not investment advice, and not a substitute for your broker’s contract note. INDfolio AI builds algo trading software; the honest connection is that our backtests apply this same cost arithmetic to every simulated trade.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Dhan charge brokerage on delivery trades?

No — equity delivery brokerage is ₹0 as of September 2026. You still pay STT (0.1% on both sides), NSE transaction charges, SEBI fees, buy-side stamp duty, GST on the non-tax components, and ₹14.75 (₹12.5 + GST) per instruction in DP charges when you sell holdings.

What does Dhan charge for futures and options?

A flat ₹20 per executed order for both — ₹40 for a complete round trip — with no percentage alternative. Statutory charges come on top: sell-side STT (0.05% on futures, 0.15% of premium on options, post Budget 2026), NSE transaction charges, SEBI fees, buy-side stamp duty and 18% GST on brokerage plus transaction charges.

Is the Dhan API really free for algo trading?

Yes — Dhan’s DhanHQ API access carries no separate subscription fee as of September 2026, which is unusual among Indian brokers. Trades placed through the API are charged at the same rates this calculator models.

How do Dhan charges compare with Zerodha?

Nearly identical: both are ₹0 on delivery, 0.03%/₹20-capped on intraday, ₹20 on options. The differences are at the margins — Dhan’s futures fee is flat ₹20 while Zerodha applies 0.03% on small orders, and Dhan’s DP charge (₹14.75) runs slightly below Zerodha’s (₹15.34). Statutory charges are identical.

Is this an official Dhan calculator?

No — it is an independent tool by INDfolio AI. Rates were verified against the broker’s published charge schedule in September 2026. Brokers revise pricing without notice, so treat results as close estimates and cross-check your contract note or the broker’s pricing page before relying on them.
